Anita Denise Baker was born in Toledo, Ohio, but Detroit made her. Placed with a foster family in the city as a toddler, she attended Central High School and, by 16, was singing R&B in Detroit nightclubs — a path that led her to the funk group Chapter 8 and, eventually, to becoming one of soul music's defining voices.
From Detroit Nightclubs to Rapture
After Chapter 8 disbanded, Baker returned to Detroit and worked as a waitress and receptionist before launching a solo career in 1982. Her 1983 debut, The Songstress, produced her first R&B Top 10 hit, but it was 1986's Rapture — recorded after she won creative control in a new deal with Elektra Records — that transformed her into a star. The Grammy-winning single "Sweet Love" reached the pop Top 10, and the album eventually sold more than eight million copies worldwide.
