By 19 he had his first serious case; he ran from probation for five years and ultimately served eight months in jail. Released in 2002, he turned to music with a new seriousness — "I had nothing else," he said, "so I just started going back to studying music."
XXX and the Breakthrough
In 2011, Brown signed to Fool's Gold Records and released the mixtape XXX, a record that fused dark humor with harrowing street tales and won him Spin's Artist of the Year and the Metro Times' Artist of the Year.
