James Newell Osterberg Jr. was born in Muskegon on April 21, 1947, and grew up in the Coachville Trailer Park in Ann Arbor. Before he was Iggy Pop, he played drums for local Ann Arbor high school band The Iguanas and absorbed blues records in Detroit record shops, developing an unhinged, hypnotic stage presence that forever altered rock 'n' roll.

The Stooges & Ann Arbor Roots

The Stooges debuted at a Halloween party in 1967 in Ann Arbor. Playing custom instruments like vacuum cleaners and blenders alongside roaring distorted guitars, Iggy pioneered crowd-surfing, stage-diving, and smearing peanut butter across his chest — performances that shocked audiences and inspired the Sex Pistols, The Ramones, and Nirvana.
