Robert James Ritchie was born on January 17, 1971, in Romeo, Michigan, just north of Detroit. Signed to Jive Records at just 17, Ritchie released his debut album, Grits Sandwiches for Breakfast, in 1990, quickly becoming one of Detroit's two biggest rap stars of the year alongside fellow independent artist Esham. He toured nationally with Ice Cube, D-Nice, and Too Short, and during in-store promotions in Detroit befriended a young rapper named Eminem, who would frequently challenge him to freestyle battles.
