At Groves High School he met Bruce Campbell, who would become his lifelong friend and the star of the Evil Dead franchise.
With Campbell and Robert Tapert, Raimi shot the short horror film Within the Woods to raise money for a feature. Through family, friends, and Metro Detroit investors, they financed The Evil Dead, which premiered at Detroit's Redford Theatre in 1981 and became a cult phenomenon.
Building the Blockbuster
After Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness cemented his cult reputation, Raimi proved his range with the western The Quick and the Dead (1995) and the acclaimed crime thriller A Simple Plan (1998). Then came Spider-Man (2002), which set a new opening-weekend box office record of $115 million and proved comic-book films could be both critically respected and commercially enormous.
Spider-Man 2 (2004) is widely regarded as one of the greatest superhero films ever made. After more than 15 years away from the genre, Raimi returned to direct Marvel's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022), and released the horror-thriller Send Help in January 2026.
