How a Detroit metalsmith turned jewelry into monuments — and made the 7 Mile + Livernois neighborhood her canvas.
In a city that builds big — cars, music, movements — Tiff Massey builds big jewelry. The Detroit-born artist takes the intimate craft of metalsmithing and blows it up to the scale of architecture: a single hair barrette becomes a sculpture taller than a person; a neon sign becomes a declaration; a row of braids becomes a forty-foot wall. It's adornment as monument, and Detroit is her gallery.
From Bench to Building
Massey was trained as a metalsmith — a discipline of patience, of tiny hammers and precise joins. In 2018 she became the first Black woman to earn an MFA in metalsmithing from the Cranbrook Academy of Art, a milestone in a field with deep historical barriers. But her genius was in refusing to stay small. She drew on 1980s hip-hop culture, the adornment traditions of the African diaspora, and her own upbringing in Detroit to ask a radical question: what happens when jewelry gets big enough to walk through?
The answer is work that is simultaneously intimate and monumental — wearable sculptures, immersive installations, and public art that celebrates Black style, community, and the neighborhoods that shaped her.
7 Mile + Livernois
In May 2024, the Detroit Institute of Arts opened 7 Mile + Livernois — Massey's most ambitious museum installation to date. The title names the intersection at the heart of Detroit's Black business and fashion district, where Massey grew up and where she is building a new art and community space. The show featured new sculptures commissioned by the DIA in conversation with works from the museum's collection, reimagining art's role in community life.

Adornment as Resistance
Massey's practice extends well beyond the museum. As a direct response to gentrification in Detroit, she has merged her art practice with real estate development, owning several properties in the city. "My work extends beyond adorning landscapes and museum interiors," she says; "it's about translating ideas of adornment to positively impact my community. My focus is to nurture and preserve space in Detroit."
That ethos — preserve space, adorn community — is what makes Massey more than an artist. She is a builder, a land-holder, a keeper of neighborhood memory in a city that has too often seen its Black spaces erased.

Awarded a Kresge Artist Fellowship, recognizing her emerging voice in Detroit's art scene.
